OWS Photo of the Year: 'Zuccotti Love'

This, posted by Zombie at PJM (but actually taken by photojournalist El Marco) isn't exactly what Zombie describes as a "Kent State Moment" or even a "Dorothea Lange Moment", sorry Zombie. This photo is, however, a great descriptor of why these Owwies won't get hired anytime soon.

The lucky Owwie kids who manage to get arrested? That’ll look great on their employment background checks. Why would any ‘evil’ corporation hire anyone arrested for bashing corporations and threatening revolution?

At least the ’60′s dirty hippies had a good reason to march. These ‘Occupy Everything’ dirty socialists only want things they haven’t earned and don’t deserve.

Also: a mother of four children, missing from her Florida home, is arrested and carted away screaming from the middle of a New York City street, whilst 'Occupying Pavement'.

This movement is a zombie attractant, really.

99%-ers' Paradoxical Dream-States

This photo (spotted here) intrigues me.

Lots of dichotomy; the healthy and well-fed '99%-er' with the protest sign looks askance at the unhealthy homeless individual sleeping on a bench. What could be running through her mind? Does she look at this person, and see herself, maybe just a matter of time until she asks him to scoot over?

Is Wall Street at fault for the plights we see (and she envisions) here?

I wonder if she has a flat-screen TV, a cell phones, a Lexus, a warm bed.

Seems just a bit unfair to me, that she would be protesting her possible future fate (whatever that fate is or she imagines it will soon be) while glancing at a man whose fate seems sealed.

I'm more interested in what he's dreaming than what she's emoting, no matter what reasons for protesting Wall Street she gives.

(Note the drain pipe point at the head of the sleeping man. He's been pissed on before, I'll warrant.)

(Oh, and what the hell is that other kid doing bent over backwards on that concrete abutment? That's a stretch I'd not like to make.)

Marilyn Monroe in Chicago: Twenty-Six Feet of Statuesque Beauty

Heh. This will make the 'upskirt'-haters cry, won't it?

This iconic pose, never yet duplicated to my satisfaction (I'll give Kate Middleton's yellow dress blowup some credit for trying) might be the most famous upskirt shot in the short history of photography.

I've had trolls complain about my Rule 5 posts, pointing out that invariably these women might well be much younger than me (Kate Upton, below the fold), or that they might be married to other men (Kate Middleton). One frequent troll even said that he didn't like women in dresses; that he didn't know any women who owned dresses; that he preferred women to wear pants. The little guy is insane, really, and likely has never known a woman (literally or biblically).

A woman who wears a dress immediately becomes classier in my never-to-be humble opinion. If yours doesn't have a dress, buy her one! (Hint: Wal-Mart is not where you want to shop for dresses! Or for women, for that matter!)

"They look just like specks of dust on the surface of the sun, but those black dots were the silhouettes of the space shuttle and the International Space Station."

Well, that's just cool.

The above photo was taken by the French photographer Thierry Legault, whose specialty is in taking pictures of solar eclipses, planetary and satellite transits. Earlier this year, he caught the moment just 50 minutes before Atlantis docked with the ISS; to take the photo, he traveled to Madrid so he would be inside the narrow five-mile wide visibility band that stretched across Spain, southern France and Northern Italy.

It is an extraordinary image, considering that the actual event was visible for just 0.54 of a second, because of the speed of two spacecrafts. To catch the event, Legault had to use an extremely fast shutter speed, combined with a pin hole-sized aperture.

Friday One-Hits; and a Friday Photo Study

* Jimmah Carter posts an obit in today's NYT: "Call off the Global Drug War". Explains much of his policies, that.

* Charles Krauthammer posts an editorial in the OC Register, pointing out that Democrats need Unions and Unions need Democrats. Nothing new and earth-shattering about that fact; just nice to see it getting ever more exposure. Two recent events prove that Unions and Democrats are in bed and furiously mating: the Boeing case and of course the Wisconsin debacle. Krauthammer...

Instructive cases all, demonstrating how those who lose popular support – Democrats at the polls, unions in their declining membership – can subvert and circumvent the popular will by judicial usurpation (Wisconsin) or administrative fiat (Boeing).

The Wisconsin maneuver ultimately failed, as likely will the assault on Boeing. In the interim, however, there is collateral damage – to U.S. exports, to the larger economy, to bankruptcy law, to free trade, to a constitutional system wherein the legislatures make the laws, rather than willful judges and partisan regulators.

But what are those when there are unions to appease and elections to win?

Damned dirty socialists, Democrats and Unions; a pox on 'em, really.

* Speaking of 'furiously mating', this photo of the street riots sparked by the Boston Bruins' ice-hockey win over the Canucks in Vancouver is said by Iowahawk to be 'The Best. Picture. Ever.'.

Wouldn't go that far, but that photo is an excellent example of far-out emotional ranging in potentially stressful and violent situations. And, coming off of Weiner's resignation yesterday, we needed a second look, for further cognitive study, of uncontrollable behaviors brought on by empathic emotional responses to situational stresses. Definitely the photo warrants a second look. Wouldn't you agree?

Pie Town, New Mexico

A couple of color photos from the Library of Congress (h/t dailymail.co.uk)...

...left me wondering 'What is this "Pie Town" of which you speak'?

It does exist, on the continental divide in western -central New Mexico...

HISTORY
In Americas great southwest, on the Continental Divide, Pie Town New Mexico is in west central New Mexico.

There lots of stories of how Pie Town got its name. This one is my favorite.

In the early 1920's Mr.Clyde Norman a tall Texan and a WW1 veteran who "liked to bake" began making dried apple pies and began making them at his at his upstart business on a piece of ground that lay along a little rocky ridge and the "Coast to Coast Highway" later to become U.S. 60. The word got around that the best pies anywhere were to be found at "Pie Town".

Pie Town has been featured in various television programs and national publications, such as the February 2005 Smithsonian Magazine

A scenic 160 miles Southwest of Albuquerque, but far enough away to find peace and quiet in an increasingly, noisy and fast paced world, Pie Town on U.S. Hwy 60 is visited by a myriad of travelers seeking a more relaxed route as well as hikers and bicyclist's from around the world traveling the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada.

At nearly 8000' above sea level this western town has a Post Office, a ELVA (Very Large Array radio telescope),and "Lester Jackson Park" which hosts the Annual Pie Town Festival on the second Saturday in September.

And they even have a blog.
