One-Fifth of American Men Aren't Worth a Damn...

... to our Society. That's all, David Brooks? I had thought many more than that, really. How many Democrats are there ?

David Brooks, writing at the NYT...

The Missing Fifth

... So Americans should be especially alert to signs that the country is becoming less vital and industrious. One of those signs comes to us from the labor market. As my colleague David Leonhardt pointed out recently, in 1954, about 96 percent of American men between the ages of 25 and 54 worked. Today that number is around 80 percent. One-fifth of all men in their prime working ages are not getting up and going to work.

According to figures from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United States has a smaller share of prime age men in the work force than any other G-7 nation. The number of Americans on the permanent disability rolls, meanwhile, has steadily increased. Ten years ago, 5 million Americans collected a federal disability benefit. Now 8.2 million do. That costs taxpayers $115 billion a year, or about $1,500 per household. Government actuaries predict that the trust fund that pays for these benefits will run out of money within seven years.
Fascinating, that. It looks like Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) will crash and burn first, before Social Security proper.

Not much is said about the disability insurance (read: entitlement) programs provided by government, at least not until recently. SSDI are benefits administered by the Social Security Administration. It is a safety net, supposedly, and like all of our government safety nets, it's in tatters; ripped to shreds by various government agendas that view the Social Security 'trust fund' as a giant 'borrowing pool' for special interests. I didn't know SSDI was running out of funds in four to seven years, but it is...
The [disability program] is set to soon become the first big federal benefit program to run out of cash — and one of the main reasons is U.S. states and territories have a large say in who qualifies for the federally funded program. Without changes, the Social Security retirement fund can survive intact through about 2040 and Medicare through 2029. The disability fund, however, will run dry in four to seven years without federal intervention, government auditors say.
That'll pressurize the cooker that's rendering our nation to soup lines.

So, the question is, who is on this SSDI program, and how long can they stay on it? How long did they expect to stay on it? Is is supposed to be a life-long free-money 'entitlement', something people who are supposedly disabled can count on for the rest of their lives? SSDI didn't start out that way. Like all of our 'entitlement' programs, SSDI was supposed to be a temporary help to people who needed to overcome a disability and so they then they could get back to work; an 'assistance' program, with the key words 'temporary assistance'. Not so much, anymore; SSDI is a way of life for some people; it's considered a permanent benefit to people who can just get approved.

Hell, there's a thriving industry of lawyers, 'Disability Attorneys', who work to get people on SSDI, long-term, for life! "WE'LL FIGHT THE GOVERNMENT FOR YOU!"

I'll bet there's more fraud and waste and deadbeats in the SSDI program than you can shake a cane at.

Back to Brooksie...
The result is this: There are probably more idle men now than at any time since the Great Depression, and this time the problem is mostly structural, not cyclical. These men will find it hard to attract spouses. Many will pick up habits that have a corrosive cultural influence on those around them. The country will not benefit from their potential abilities.
"Corrosive cultural influence"? Shit-flinging monkeys at the Daily KOS, laid-off Union thugs in Connecticut, you've been uncovered!

Some of these SSDI recipients are gaming the system. There's a subset of that group of recipients who are fat, dumb and happy; some are likely criminals, many are dullards, more are just damned lazy. But there's too many, and in a few years they will find themselves hungry and screaming for Government to pay them off.

They are a gold-mine for socialists, for Democrats, for left-winging votes

Over the years, since FDR and LBJ, we've opened the floodgates to socialism; creating programs and entitlements intended as temporary safety nets but given the political ramifications of promising more and more benefits for votes, these programs are out of their banks and rising like the waters of the Mississippi River rose this week; slowly but relentlessly and inexorably. The Mississippi crested; this flood of damaging social spending must crest as well, leaving behind a mess that someone will have to clean up.

Obama can't clean up runaway social; he's too busy knocking down the dams and seeding the clouds. Let it RAIN, bitches! Free stuff for ALL! who Vote DEMOCRATIC!

I doubt there's a Republican candidate who is electable who can come in and save this nation. There is no voice of sanity these overwhelmingly neo-socialistic 'citizens' will elect. Everyone is just wanting something for nothing; and waiting for the next shoe to drop.

It's happening, one failing social program at a time.

Here on the Titantic, the band is starting to play on deck, and some fat gal is singing out of tune over there in the fo'c'sle.

Fun times!

Meanwhile, a return to the gold standard: why are we not there yet? Because we cannot PRINT GOLD, as we can print this worthless Dollar; and Democrats cannot promise GOLD to their moocher voters as a lure. There is sanity in the gold standard. Can we make it? or will the calamitous crash have to happen prior, sparking the return to the gold standard?

We shall see.

Oh, and speaking of shit-flinging monkeys...

Steelworkers Official Facing Charges of Threats and Feces Throwing

A union official is facing criminal charges after allegedly threatening MLA Jenny Kwan, her husband and their children and throwing feces onto the family’s roof, according to court documents filed Friday.
Ms. Kwan has faced criticism from some B.C. New Democrats because of the prominent role she played in party leader Carole James’s forced resignation late last year.

Kim Pollock, a United Steelworkers research representative and long-time party supporter, has been charged with mischief as a result of the feces-throwing incident, which took place on April 1. He has also been charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, which were allegedly made to Ms. Kwan and her family on Dec. 1, 2010.
Union turds. Worse than regular ones, really.
