Americans perceive that more Americans are teh ghey than are actually Gay. Why is that, you ask?

Gallup does the poll (see here) and has this analysis...
Americans perceive that there is a large U.S. gay population -- one far larger than is likely reality. Perhaps more informative than the exact figure Americans give is the trend that more Americans now than in 2002 feel they have enough information to offer an estimate. This suggests Americans have had even more exposure to gays and lesbians, be it in their personal lives or through entertainment or other means. It is also noteworthy that demographics appear in most cases to be more predictive of views in this matter than are political or ideological leanings.
More exposure? MORE EXPOSURE?? How about having it shoved down our collective throats by Hollyweird Media and the 'politically correct' lawmakers (Democrats, mostly) who legislate 'rights' for these sap-suckers? Even the U.S. Military has jumped on the "GAY? OK!" bandwagon. Stars like the Lady GarGoyle forcibly push the gay agenda onto their fan base.

So, we see people perceiving that over 25% of Americans are gay, a ludicrous figure. Maybe the definition of 'gay' included people who act gay but aren't (most Democrats &c.), that's certainly possible.

A subset of the numbers by ideology: Democrats estimate 28% of Americans are gay; Independents, 25%, Republicans 20.2%. There you see the overwhelming acceptance, and encouragement to be gay given by Democrats, expressed in numbers.

Sigh. What a freakin' mess this nation is in.
